The Rights & Responsibilities of a Reader

I have the right to...

• read books for enjoyment.
• read books that challenge me.
• read books that don’t challenge me.
• read books that are just right.
• read the ending of a book before I get to the end pretend I’m a character in the book I’m reading.
• abandon a book that doesn’t fit my values or hold my interest.
• dream up alternate endings for the books I read.
• read a book again and again (and again if I want).

I have the responsibility to...

• treat books with respect.
• respect that everyone has the right to choose what they read.
• credit an author when I use an excerpt of his or her work.
• speak with my teacher or librarian if I’m assigned to read a book that makes me uncomfortable.
• learn how to use the library for both leisure and research.
• challenge myself to become a better reader.
• keep reading!
