WEIGHTED: 0.5
Grade: 9-12
Credit: 1 unit
PREREQUISITE: None
Introductory course in the Project Lead the Way Biomedical Sciences Program. Student work involves the study of human
medicine, research processes and an introduction to bio-informatics. Students investigate the human body systems and various
health conditions including heart disease, hypercholesterolemia, diabetes, sickle-cell disease, and infectious diseases. A theme
throughout the course is to determine the factors that led to the death of a fictitious person. Key biological concepts taught
include: homeostasis, metabolism, inheritance of traits, feedback systems, and defense against disease. Engineering principles
include: the design process, feedback loops, fluid dynamics, and the relationship of structure to function. May be offered for dual
credit for eligible students. Dual credit information can be found under the Advanced Studies section.
