Middle School Boundaries

To determine new boundaries, LSR7 assembles a collaborative group of district stakeholders, including parents, staff, community members and administrators called a Boundary Study Team.

The team reviews project enrollment growth, establishes parameters tied to student movement, generates proposed boundary options, engages the community to seek feedback, refines recommendations and presents final recommendations to the Board of Education. The Board of Education ultimately approved all new boundaries in LSR7.

The 2021 Middle School Boundary Team established the following criteria to guide its work:

Enrollment: To promote balance, the differences in our middle school populations should not be too great. For every boundary option, the team is using projected enrollment for our four middle schools to review differences in both 2022 and 2030.

Transportation: Safely and efficiently transporting our students to school is part of our mission of serving all the needs of our students. The team is consulting with our transportation department regarding how well each proposal supports our transportation needs.

Split schools: The team is committed to minimizing instances where elementary or middle school populations "split" into different middle or high schools, while balancing the importance of upholding other determined criteria.

Free and reduced lunch populations: Looking at how our boundaries impact the demographics of our schools, especially when it comes to socioeconomic status, is an important part of ensuring our work promotes access, opportunity and balance within our school system.

7th Grade Impact: Our boundary work will create situations where some students attend one middle school in 2021-22 and another in 2022-23. The team is reviewing the impact each proposal has in this area.

Geography: Based on community feedback, the team also considered geography, how far a student has to travel to get to school.

LSR7 is transitioning to a grades 6-8 middle school model! Changing our middle school approach requires transformation, both inside and outside the classroom. That’s why we are reimagining the academic and extracurricular opportunities we provide in middle school AND investing in new and improved learning environments. Construction of our fourth middle school (East Trails Middle School) as well as renovations at our three existing middle schools are part of this commitment and will be complete by next summer. These projects are made possible by voter support through our 2020 no tax rate increase bond issue. Adding a fourth middle school requires the district to answer an important question: how should middle school students flow into four buildings starting in 2022? Our collaborative boundaries process worked to answer that question.
