Dinner with the Board
The Board of Education offers opportunities for two-way communication between members of our school community and elected officials through its "Dinner with the Board" series.
Join Us for "Dinner with the Board"
What to Expect: Participants will engage in small-group discussions guided by a facilitator using the World-Cafe style. You’ll have the chance to rotate tables, discuss the topic with different Board members, and connect with fellow community members. At the end of each evening, groups will "harvest" their discussions, sharing key takeaways with the entire group.
A professional graphic artist will be on hand to create a visual record of our community’s collective insights.
Plus, Enjoy Free Pizza: We know meaningful conversations happen best over a meal. That’s why we’re providing free pizza to all attendees. Come hungry for both food and dialogue!
Fall 2024: Cell Phones in the School Environment
During Fall 2024, the Board's series centered around a topic that is shaping the experiences of students every day: the impact of cell phones in the school environment. Prompted by insights from the book The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt. The Board gained community insights on cell phone access at school from nearly 200 community members through this community conversation at all three high schools.
This insight, in addition to feedback from internal and external committees was invaluable guidance. During the October 2024 Board of Education meeting, the board approved the following revision to Board Policy JG-R1: STUDENT DISCIPLINE:
"Effective January 7, 2025, the use of personal electronic devices, including cell phones, is prohibited during instructional time for students in grades 9–12 and prohibited during the entire school day for students in grades K–8. Exceptions to this rule may only be granted with prior approval from the building principal or designee for academic purposes. Additionally, the use of any camera or video-enabled electronic device is strictly forbidden in locker rooms and restrooms at all times."
