Sixth Grade Exploratory Courses
Exploratory Wheel 1.0 (Full Year)
All 6th grade students will take 1.0 unit of credit from the following options unless they choose to participate in a year-long band or strings elective.
Discovering World Languages and Cultures (6 Weeks)
Discovering World Languages and Cultures is a six week course that will introduce students to languages and cultures from around the world. Each week students will visit a different continent and explore languages spoken in that region. Students will learn vocabulary through daily listening, speaking, reading and writing activities. Grades will be based on daily work and short quizzes. This class is highly recommended for students who are considering taking a Modern Language course in seventh and/or eighth grade.
Exploring Business, Marketing, and Information Technology (6 Weeks)
A 6 week course diving into the world of business and computer science to help BizCity solve real-world problems. You will use technology, design thinking, and business concepts to communicate, collaborate, and create solutions. Along the way, learn how a community is interconnected through business and people while exploring career opportunities.
Exploring Family Consumer Science (6 Weeks)
A course exploring basic teen essentials to develop self-discovery, friendships, and independent life skills.
Exploring Engineering and Industrial Technology (6 Weeks)
In this course, students will be introduced to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) concepts and how these relate to the real world. This course takes on an interdisciplinary approach to STEM topics and allows students to explore each of the STEM disciplines. Students will attain knowledge of Engineering and Industrial Technology careers, through the design process, measurement, sketching, and 3D modeling. Throughout the length of this course, students will develop and use 21st century skills including problem-solving, critical thinking, technological literacy, innovation, and collaboration.
Introduction to Broadcasting/Video Technology, Speech, and Theatre (6 Weeks)
This course introduces broadcasting, technology, speech, and theatre. Students learn foundational skills for success in subsequent ELA elective courses.
Medical Detectives (6-Weeks)
In the Medical Detectives unit, students play the role of real-life medical detectives as they collect and analyze medical data to diagnose disease. They solve medical mysteries through hands-on projects and labs such as measuring and interpreting vital signs, dissecting a sheep brain, investigating disease outbreaks, and exploring how a breakdown within the human body can lead to dysfunction.
All 6th grade students will automatically be enrolled in these classes.
All students will take these electives.
Students take three six-week courses per semester if they do not participate in band or strings.
Students may take year-long band or strings courses in place of exploratory courses.
